Do you have a child that seems to grow an inch per second? No matter what size of clothes you buy, they seem to only wear it once and NEVER again? What if I told you that by renting your child’s clothes, you could save MONEY, TIME and EFFORT?

In today’s Featured Friday post, we meet entrepreneurs Ashley Kitada and her spouse/owner of fittedtot. I first learned about this company when I was scrolling through my Twitter feed this April. It immediately caught my attention when the post mentioned something to the effect that you could save time and money by using their service to get UNLIMITED clothes for your child.

I mean, who doesn’t want unlimited clothes? Plus FREE SHIPPING! Minus the clutter!

No more bags full of unwanted clothes stacked in the corner of your closet or storage.

Now, I’m not sure about you, but I don’t like to go shopping, I know, I’m a little odd but just thinking of having to go and wrestle the crowds and beat the heat, NO WAY! Plus, I usually end up shopping for, you guessed it, my boys.

Of course, this was the perfect remedy! I ordered my first box this past week.

What is fittedtot?

Fittedtot is a monthly subscription based service for children wearing clothes sized from 3 months to 5T. When you sign up, you answer basic questions: gender, size and season and leave any notes for your stylist if you’d like. You can always update any of the information requested above to help fit your child’s needs.

Once you subscribe, your stylist will work their magic and put together cute outfits for your child. Now, just wait for your box to arrive and check out the pieces.

Our Review

After much anticipation, our fittedtot box arrived after two days from placing my order.  It was speedy service and delivery, which arrived in perfect timing because my son just started a Summer School Program where he doesn’t have to wear a uniform.

When it arrived, my oldest immediately wanted to open the animal decorated box thinking that it was toys. After explaining that they weren’t toys but clothes, he still stayed to take a look at what was inside.

TADA!

As we opened the box, you can see that the clothes is neatly folded and wrapped in tissue paper with a card containing a list price of the items should you want to keep them. Don’t think you will pay full price, NO, you will keep the clothes and get 20% discount from the retail price.

The team sent us three coordinated play outfits, one premium outfit and pajamas. They came pre-washed in hypoallergenic detergent recommended by pediatricians which had a soft scent.

I liked the fact that they pre-wash them because I usually wash clothes even if it’s new from the store.

You can use and reuse the clothes for as long as you wish and once you’re ready for a new shipment, just mail the clothes back in the enclosed postage paid envelope for your new set of outfits. Did I mention unlimited?

The first outfit my oldest was excited to wear was the animal print shirt, so here he is posing early in the morning before heading to school:

I liked the fact that the clothes came coordinated as I am not much of a stylist and usually have trouble finding matching pieces. Hence why I don’t shop much.

Needless to say, we loved the sets and since both my boys wear about the same size, I will reuse the sets with my little one and then send them back to get other cool sets.

The only set we might not be using at this moment are the Pj’s since they are long sleeve and the zippered type which might be a little hot for the weather, although it was the thin fabric. However, the other sets were fantastic!

The only regret I have is that I wish they would’ve had this service when my babies were months old so I could’ve taken advantage of this service.

If you are expecting or have little ones that wear 5T and under, take advantage of this great service. Plus, if the clothes gets stained or torn, don’t worry because there is no additional fee or cost. They will try to repair or clean it for you.

Now, the moment you’ve been waiting for, let’s meet the owners of fittedtot, Ashley and John, which by the way let’s congratulate them on their soon to be born bundle of joy!

The Interview

Tell us a little about yourself (and/or other owners of the company)?

I’m a 26 year-old, soon to be first time mother (due June 18th).

(Yay, CONGRATULATIONS! Sorry, go on.)

I have 3 stepchildren and an amazing husband.  I met my husband in the Army Reserve, which I had joined to help pay for my undergrad and received training as a paralegal.  After completing my degree in political science from Eastern Michigan University, I attended law school at DePaul University in Chicago for a year and a half.  At that point we found out we were pregnant and I moved home to West Michigan.  It was then that the idea for fittedtot was conceived and John, my husband, and I got to work.

Would you consider yourself an introvert or extrovert?

I would say I’m more of an introvert most times.  I tend to analyze situations and avoid unnecessary conversations if possible.  For example, if we’re just browsing through a store and a sales person approaches us, I’ll try to end the conversation as soon as possible.  My husband on the other hand loves to talk to them.  We tend to balance each other out.

Tell us what made you start this company specifically for toddlers up to size 5T? How did you come about this idea?

My original idea was for infants since they grow out of their clothes by the month but then decided to extend into toddler sizes since they too end up growing out of their clothes quickly.  I was looking for a service clothes rental company like one I had used while attending Law School but for children, and I couldn’t find one.  We’ve always wanted to be business owners but we couldn’t find an idea that seemed feasible and that we were passionate about until I brought this idea up.

Have you thought about adding older sizes for those of us that have older kiddos?

Yes, we definitely hope to add more sizes as our company grows and we are able to handle a larger inventory.

How long did it take to implement the company, from the idea, support, merchandize, marketing and finally to launch it?

It took about three months from the time I came up with the idea to when we set our launch date.

Being that there are other similar services like this, what makes yours unique?

We have found that most other services like this are focused on selling customers the clothes they send them. Our service is more about the convenience of receiving clothes that your child will really only wear maybe once or twice and then return since they will grow out of it quickly anyway.  Our customers are able to have their children wear an unlimited amount of really cute outfits, but never have to worry about what to do with all the outgrown clothes that they would have if they had purchased each item.

How do you come up with the many different pieces for your customers?

We try to add a variety of styles and brands to each box while also sticking to the current trends and weather. We have recently added a section to our checkout process that allows our customers to write us notes about their clothes preferences, so we try to follow those requests as much as possible.  Before the new field we’ve added to the checkout process, we took requests via email and returned comment cards from customers to make sure their style preferences are taken into account.

Did you ever think you would become owners of such company?

It was our intent to be business owners, but I couldn’t have imagined working with baby clothes before I got pregnant.

For many that are thinking of becoming entrepreneurs but are afraid to do so, what advice would you give them?

Be smart about it, but once you find an opportunity or idea you’re passionate about, go for it! Starting and operating a business is not like a 9 to 5 job.  Nothing will happen unless you constantly research your field, put in consistent effort, and learn from your failures.  You will have setbacks and failures; learn from them, adjust your strategy and don’t give up on your goal.

How do you balance work and life?

This is something that I’m sure a lot of entrepreneurs struggle with.  Keeping a schedule and making sure to make family time a priority is critical.

Any additional comments or advice?

Find as many ways to network as possible.  Talking to people has opened so many unexpected doors for us.

Conclusion

Thank you for your time Ashley and your words of wisdom. As she mentioned above, “put in consistent effort and learn from your failures.” Nothing will get done if you don’t make the effort to pursue your dreams. If you’ve been wanting to start a business, whether it’s something big like fittedtot’s services or becoming an entrepreneur in another industry, if you just think about it, you will get nowhere. It starts with a thought and it can become reality with a plan and goal.

P.S. What goals do you have for yourself for the upcoming month? Years? Is there something that you’ve been wanting to implement but just don’t know how to begin?
